Coquina Bow Detail

Coquina Bow Detail

I have been drawn to water for as long as I can remember, I grew up with a large pond and a creek running through the farm, started kayaking and canoing around age 8 and sailing at 10. My father builds custom homes and I have always helped him with fine woodwork and cabinetry. I first made the connection between woodworking and water sports when a friend gave me a wooden sail boat that needed repairs to the bow and rudder. After completing these repairs and redesigning the bow in the process, I was hooked on boatbuilding.

In the fall of 2006 I started my first boat, built to the Nat Herreshoff "Coquina" design. I enjoyed every aspect of construction as well as sailing her when complete. I exhibited her at the 2007 Wooden boat show in Mystic and received many complements, and I was even featured in Soundings magazine. Later that summer I founded Schleiff Boatworks LLC and did several restoration and repair projects. I am now just finishing a Rescue Minor (20' launch)that is for sale and will be on display in Mystic,CT June 27-29 2008. My next project is an Atkin designed "Ninigret" 22' outboard powered coastal cruising boat. The next boat could be yours! Visit www.schleiffboatworks.com
