Scale models of lapstrake boats from the 1800’s

Model of 16 foot Ray Speck Sid Skiff

Model of 16 foot Ray Speck Sid Skiff

While attending The Northwest School of Woodenboat Building back in 1998/99, I developed a passion for wooden lapstrake work boats from the 1700 and 1800s. The photographs are of three recently scratch built scale models.

The first is Ray Speck’s beautiful 16 foot Sid Skiff built at 2 inches to the foot. The second is the 16 foot 6 inch decked south Jersey beach skiff also built at 2 inches to the foot and the third boat is a 1-1/2 inch to the foot model of George Holmes 1888 canoe yawl Ethel. Harry Broady of Monroe Washington had a full sized boat built by William Clements, professional boat builder, back in 1986 with the full sized boat being named Nord Vinden. Harry ordered the model, as he is no longer able to sail Nord Vinden.
