Joseph Conrad Summer Camp
Sailing Classes at Mystic Seaport
Pictured above is the Joseph Conrad which serves as a summer camp for sailing classes at Mystic Seaport. While staying aboard this old sailing ship, students are taught character-building skills and encouraged to participate in a wide range of social activities. The sailing program is open to youngsters of 10-15 years old. Experienced campers may come back as counselors in the Sailing Assistant Program. The three-masted square-rigger once served as a training ship for young Danish men entering the merchant service. The vessel has continued its role of teaching here at Mystic for over 50 years. The program is limited to 40 boys and girls for each six day session and runs from late June to early August.
Off to the left in the photo, are the masts of the sail boats used in the program. The fleet of Dyer Dhows provide supervised sailing in Mystic's sheltered port. Other programs for older young men and women, ages 15-19, are held aboard the Brilliant, a 62 foot schooner. More advanced leadership skills are learned through sailing this ocean certified ship, owned and wonderfully maintained by Mystic Seaport.
